MFM Volunteer Spotlight

Music for Minors Volunteer Educators are the heart of our organization. An ongoing community of nearly 100 dedicated individuals contribute their time and talent to bring weekly core music education to children in participating schools. They share their love of music with thousands of young elementary students, many of whom are experiencing music education for the first time. The following profiles give an idea of the quality of MFM’s extraordinary volunteers. Check back for new additions!

Marilyn Entin, MFM Volunteer

Marilyn Entin

For the past 10 years, Marilyn Entin has been sharing the gift of music with all of the first graders at Guadalupe School in San Jose.   “In 2001, when I retired from 33 years of teaching elementary school,” Marilyn said, “I decided to totally immerse myself in music.”  Becoming an MFM docent was a natural next step, bringing together these two important threads of her life.  A singer since the age of two, Marilyn has continued to enjoy organized singing, and performs with both the Bay Area Showcase and Mission Valley Choruses.  Three years ago she even began a 3rd to 5th grade chorus at Guadalupe.  Learn more about Marilyn.

Nayna Patel, Program Coordinator MFM

Erik Chen

Erik Chen first trained as a docent in 2008.  He and his family live in Belmont, and he is employed full time by Google.  Initially Erik jumped in with MFM because he wanted to be sure that his own children would receive music education when they began school.  “If it takes me being there doing it, that’s what I’ll do.  Music is that important to me,” he says.  With perfect pitch, and many years of playing piano and violin, Erik was also seeking a way to use his musical experience that had never been part of his professional life. Michele Haussler

Three years ago, the kindergartners and first graders at Adelante Spanish-English Immersion School had no music. Then along came Michelle Haussler who has had an impact beyond anything she ever imagined. After a teacher suggested she look into MFM, Michele launched a process that has culminated in an ongoing music program for hundreds of children. Although she did not fully understand its importance at that time, Michele has truly become an impassioned music teacher, fundraiser, and activist. Learn more about Michele.
