Roving Docent Program
Roving Docents are music educators who are available to visit schools for one-time presentations on special topics. Roving Docent presentations focus on each educator's particular area of expertise, and can further enrich students' musical exposure beyond what the MFM Docent brings to the class on a weekly basis. Current offerings include:
- "Blow, Bang & Twang," an age-appropriate explanation of the physics of sound
- "Peter and the Wolf," including a demonstration of the instruments featured in Prokofiev's musical fairy tale (flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, bassoon, and French horn) intermingled with puppetry and storytelling
- Introduction to American folk music, incorporating a five-string banjo, guitar, harmonica, jaw harp, and violin
- The Rhythmaires, a nine-piece Dixieland band, performing old-time favorite tunes, and individual instrument demonstrations
School Requirements
Schools interested in scheduling a Roving Docent presentation need to be enrolled in the MFM In-School Docent Program. An active Music for Minors Docent must coordinate the event and be present with the classroom teachers during the presentation. The value of these presentations can be further enhanced by preparing students in advance. MFM Liaisons or Docents should check with the Roving Docent for suggestions when contact is made.
Schedule
Contact your MFM Liaison or Docent at your school to reserve a Roving Docent visit.
Program Fees
There is no cost to schedule a Roving Docent program as long as your school has an active MFM Docent. Schools are always welcome to make donations to MFM to help underwrite these presentations.
